Dear Subscribers:
We’re just a few days away from America’s election, which the world is watching, while many Americans seem to be on the verge of a mental health crisis. I’m in the counterintelligence business, not the political prediction business, so I’m not offering extended prognostications about what will happen on Tuesday.
That said, I think there are three plausible outcomes: a narrow Harris victory; a narrow Trump victory (keep in mind that either of those could result in a split decision between the popular vote and the Electoral College, which would be controversial in the current frayed political climate); a resounding Trump victory. The last outcome seems increasingly possible, based on early voting trends, but everything hinges on turnout on election day, and that’s something nobody can predict. Per the venerable Zen Master: We’ll see.
The outcome which must be avoided is a political crisis resulting if it takes days or even weeks to count the vote in certain key states, amid a tight Electoral College tally, at which point Congress gets involved and all hell breaks loose. That unhappy outcome is more likely than most Americans care to ponder, so let’s hope that whoever wins on Tuesday does so resoundingly.
Top Secret Umbra will drop a couple counterintelligence stories between now and election day. These will be open posts, given their timing, so share them widely if you like. Neither is exactly flattering to Team Obama-Biden-Harris, but I doubt there are many voters who are still undecided at this point. If Trump reenters the Oval Office, there will be plenty to report on Republicans behaving badly when back in power. I take my job of pursuing difficult truths, no matter where they lead nor whom they offend, seriously. That’s what nonpartisan counterintelligence is about.
